Armando R. Hernandez...potter, clay artist I was introduced to the clay arts by the ceramic artist Florence Roberts of Eureka, California. It was in her studio, working as a slip caster, pouring liquid clay into plaster moulds, that my connection to clay was established. I’ve studied the clay arts, especially the potter’s wheel and glazes, since my mid-twenties. I attended universities, art institutes, and local community colleges that offered instruction and access to the necessary equipment and glaze materials. My primary trade from the age of forty was teaching social studies to high school students in the Los Angeles area. Pottery was my main hobby. Upon retirement I delved into the craft full time. Here at the Curley School artist community, I manage the clay arts studio. Its purpose is to provide for the residents of the Curley School 24/7 availability to a full and functioning clay arts studio, and to provide an ‘outreach program’ to the community to participate in the clay arts. My personal clay interests are functional pottery, especially the bowl and tableware. I am currently engaged in a mosaic type of work, something I call ‘ceramic painting.’
