A Self Guided Mural Tour Through Ajo, Arizona

In Ajo, Arizona, art is not tucked away inside galleries. It spills into alleyways, stretches across historic buildings, appears unexpectedly in the desert landscape, and lives within the stories of the community itself.

Murals, mosaics, sculptures, painted homes, and public art installations can be found throughout town, creating an experience that feels less like visiting a museum and more like wandering through an open air gallery shaped by history, culture, and creativity.

Whether you are visiting for the weekend, staying at the Sonoran Desert Inn & Conference Center on the historic Curley School Creative Campus, or simply passing through on your way to Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, a self guided mural tour is one of the best ways to experience the creative spirit of Ajo.

Here is a walkable route through town that blends art, architecture, local history, and community storytelling.

Start at the Ajo Plaza

Begin your morning in the heart of town at the historic Ajo Plaza, surrounded by Spanish Colonial Revival architecture, towering palms, and wide open desert skies.

Before setting out, grab a coffee and light breakfast from Oasis Coffee. It is the perfect place to settle into the slower rhythm of Ajo while planning your route through town.

As you wander through the Plaza, take time to explore the interpretive signs located throughout the area. These displays help tell the deeper story of Ajo as a cultural crossroads and the ancestral homeland of the O’odham People.

Visitors can also learn about the thoughtful design of the Ajo townsite itself — from the elegant central Plaza to the Spanish Colonial Revival architecture that gives Ajo its distinct beauty and sense of place. The town was carefully planned during the mining era, creating the walkable and visually striking community visitors experience today.

Even before you begin seeking out murals, the Plaza itself tells a story through architecture, landscape, and public art.

Visit the Historic Train Depot

From the Plaza, make your way to the historic visitor center housed inside Ajo’s old train station depot.

Today, the building serves as a visitor information hub and also houses the local radio station upstairs, adding another layer of creative energy to the town. The depot itself reflects Ajo’s layered history as a former mining community and transportation hub.

It is a wonderful first stop for visitors wanting to learn more about the community before diving deeper into the public art scattered throughout town.

Wander Through Artist Alley

Next, head toward Artist Alley, located between the Plaza and Three Nations Market.

This colorful corridor has become one of Ajo’s most creative pockets. Murals, painted surfaces, and artistic installations turn the alley into an evolving outdoor gallery.

As you continue around Three Nations Market, visitors will notice murals lining multiple sides of the property, creating a vibrant and immersive artistic environment that reflects the diversity and creativity of the region.

This stretch is perfect for slowing down, taking photos, and appreciating the way art and everyday life intersect in Ajo.

Return Through the Plaza to Memory Park

From Three Nations Market, make your way back through the Plaza toward the opposite side where you will find Memory Park, home of the Ajo Memory Project.

Dedicated in May 2011, the project was created to record, honor, and commemorate the voices, images, and memories of the residents of Mexican Town, Indian Village, and other forgotten sections of the Ajo townsite from 1916 to 1983.

Its purpose is to foster community healing, preserve the historical record of mining in Arizona, and share these stories with future generations.

Visitors can explore historical photographs, mosaics, murals, and storytelling elements that transform the park into an outdoor archive of community memory.

More than simply a public art installation, the Ajo Memory Project serves as a powerful reminder that art can preserve history and give voice to generations of residents whose stories deserve to be remembered.

Along the way back through the Plaza, visitors will also continue discovering murals and artistic details woven throughout the historic town center.

Explore More Murals Around Town

As you continue wandering through Ajo, you will discover additional murals on and around the historic Ajo Copper News building and throughout neighboring streets.

One of the joys of exploring Ajo is that there is no single “art district.” Creativity appears organically throughout town, revealing itself in unexpected places.

Keep your eyes open for the whimsical “Ghosts of Ajo” by artist Val Ushuk — ghostlike figures subtly embedded into the landscape and architecture around town. Spotting them becomes its own scavenger hunt and offers another layer of discovery during your walk.

End Your Tour at the Curley School Creative Campus

No creative tour of Ajo would be complete without visiting the Curley School Creative Campus.

Originally built as a school campus and now transformed into a thriving arts community, the Curley campus is home to artist live-work apartments, creative studios, community gathering spaces, and the Sonoran Desert Inn & Conference Center.

Visitors can explore murals surrounding the Clay Studio and Wood Shop, discover artwork around Coyote Commons, which is also the front desk of the Sonoran Desert Inn, and continue through the campus to find art integrated throughout gathering spaces like the Curley Coffee shop and Ajo Eats.

Inside Coyote Commons, visitors can also browse the artist gift shop featuring artwork, handmade goods, and gifts created by many local and regional artists — a wonderful opportunity to bring home a piece of Ajo’s creative spirit while directly supporting working artists.

Because the Curley campus is also home to residents and working artists, visitors are encouraged to explore respectfully and be mindful that people live and create here year round. The campus is both a welcoming public space and an active creative community.

Ajo as an Open Air Gallery

One of the most beautiful parts of exploring Ajo is realizing that the creativity here extends far beyond official murals and installations.

Throughout town, residents have transformed their homes with colorful paint choices, found object sculptures, mosaics, gardens, and artistic touches that make entire neighborhoods feel expressive and alive.

In Ajo, art is not confined to museums or galleries. It is part of the streetscape, part of the architecture, and part of the community itself.

So take your time. Wander slowly. Look closely.

You never know what piece of Ajo’s creative spirit you will discover next.
