International Day of Peace in Ajo: A Celebration Across Borders

Every September, Ajo comes together for one of its most colorful and meaningful community traditions: the International Day of Peace Celebration.
Hosted by the International Sonoran Desert Alliance (ISDA) in collaboration with local schools, businesses, civic organizations and regional partners, the celebration brings people together from across the Sonoran Desert for an afternoon of art, culture, food, music and friendship.
This year’s celebration will take place on Monday, September 21, 2026, continuing a tradition that reflects Ajo’s unique place in the tri-national Sonoran Desert region.
A Celebration Across Cultures and Communities
Located near the U.S.–Mexico border and alongside the Tohono O’odham Nation, Ajo sits within a landscape where communities, cultures and traditions have long been connected.
International Day of Peace celebrates those relationships through a joyful community gathering centered on friendship, respect, creativity and cultural exchange.
For visitors, it is also a wonderful opportunity to experience another side of Ajo — one shaped not only by its historic architecture and desert landscapes, but by the people and cultures that give the community its distinctive character.
A Parade Unlike Any Other
One of the most anticipated parts of Ajo’s International Day of Peace celebration is the community parade.
Students and community members from Ajo, the Tohono O’odham Nation and Mexico come together for a colorful procession through town and into the historic Ajo Plaza.
Past celebrations have included origami peace cranes, giant dove puppets, Sonoran Desert creatures, peace poles, flags, colorful costumes and hundreds of participants filling the streets with creativity and celebration.
By the time the parade arrives at the Plaza, the festivities are only beginning.
Music, Dance, Food & Community
The Ajo Plaza becomes the heart of the celebration, with cultural performances, music, dance, food vendors, community organizations and activities continuing throughout the day.
Visitors can expect to experience a lively mix of traditions from throughout the region, with performances and activities designed to bring people together.
Art with a Message
Art has always played an important role in Ajo’s International Day of Peace.
Each year, local artists, students and community members contribute to creative projects centered around themes of peace, connection and community. Large peace-themed murals and public art installations have transformed the Plaza during past celebrations, while puppets, banners and handmade pieces bring even more color to the parade.
The result feels especially fitting for Ajo, where collaborative art and creative placemaking are such an important part of community life.
A Distinctly Ajo Tradition
The United Nations observes the International Day of Peace each year on September 21, but Ajo has created a celebration with its own unmistakable Sonoran Desert spirit.
It is a day filled with art and music, but also with something deeper: an opportunity for neighboring communities to gather, celebrate their cultures and recognize the connections they share across the region.
